Studies planned for expansion of Bolivia’s Amazon power generation park

Bolivia’s state power company Ende launched bidding to carry out complementary studies for generation projects in the Amazon basin.

The work will cover the national grid, isolated systems and international connections.

Tasks include conducting analysis of different seasonal scenarios to forecast demand and the technical, financial and tariff impact on the grid, and determining required transmission infrastructure.

Procurement information is available in the Documents box in the top-right corner of the screen. Once the work order is issued, the contract will run through November 30, 2025.

Not all are convinced, however, of the need to develop additional power generation infrastructure due to Bolivia’s surplus and uncertain offtake from neighboring markets.

The Andean country’s installed capacity stands at around 3,600MW while the maximum load is close to half this number.

In the case of hydroelectric plants in the Amazon, another challenge would be environmental opposition coupled with the high cost of building lines.

Ende also has a tender underway for consultancy work related to the 600MW Rositas hydro project and is building the 290MW Ivirizu and 204MW Miguillas hydro plants.
