Study: Nicaragua has worst sanitation

Bnamericas
Nicaragua has the least adequate amenities for basic sanitation in Central America, newspaper La Prensa Nicaragua reported, citing information from a study published recently by the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Eclac) in Mexico. The study, carried out by Ana Sojo, noted that in Nicaragua 48.3% of homes lack basic sanitation. This was followed by Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. Across the region, an average of 25.8% of Central American households lack basic sanitation. The percentage is higher in urban than in rural areas, with 30.1% and 20.7% respectively lacking sanitation. Some 13.1% of the region's homes lack drinking water service. Moreover, one in every three Central American homes is "overcrowded," the report said.
