Sungrow plans to build US$160mn battery storage, transmission project in Chile

Chinese renewables developer Sungrow submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a US$157mn project to install a transmission line and a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Melipilla municipality in Santiago’s metropolitan region.
The project entails a battery storage complex with 184 units with a maximum capacity of 923MWh.
These units will be linked to an elevation substation with a 125MVA transformer, which in turn will connect to a 230m, 220kV transmission line connected to the Nueva Melipilla substation, according to the EIA.
The full EIA submitted to environmental review agency SEA can be seen here, in Spanish.
“The objective of the project is to store energy, mainly generated by non-conventional renewable energy sources during daylight hours, and then inject it into the national power grid at times of high demand,” the document said.
Construction should start in August 2026 and take six months, while useful life is 30 years.
