Suriname plans hydro plant overhaul, eyeing natural gas

Suriname’s state oil company Staatsolie is conducting studies for the possible modernization of the 189MW Afobaka hydro dam (pictured) built in the 1960s.

Information from the NOC reveals that the overhaul envisions the replacement of the plant’s six turbines with a more efficient model.

Staatsolie Power (SPCS) operates Afobaka and a 96MW thermo plant which together cover 75% of the country’s electricity demand. The latter also supplies power and steam to Staatsolie’s refinery.

The government acquired Afobaka from US aluminum maker Alcoa in January 2020 and transferred the asset to SPCS.

Staatsolie, which created a sustainable energy directorate in 2019 as part of a gradual transition to a low carbon enterprise, is also studying how to optimize reservoir management, increase water supply to the reservoir via cloud seeding and a floating solar power array.

Another 2021 key focus area for the state operator is the potential use of natural gas from future offshore upstream operations.
