Tahoe responds to Guatemala legal claim

Environmental NGO CALAS has filed a claim against Guatemala's energy and mines ministry (MEM) related to the license for Tahoe Resources' Escobal mine.

The claim alleges the ministry violated the Xinca indigenous people's right of consultation in advance of granting the license to local subsidiary Minera San Rafael, Tahoe said in a release.

The company said the claim is without merit, due to the absence of indigenous communities in or around the mine, and said hundreds of meetings and open consultations were conducted in the area dating back to 2010.

Minera San Rafael consulted with a number of indigenous people in these meetings, Tahoe said.

"This is an attempt by an anti-mining NGO to oppose mining and other development in Guatemala despite the many benefits that these projects bring to local communities," CEO Ron Clayton said.

CALAS did not immediately respond to a request for information from BNamericas.

Escobal (pictured), Guatemala's main silver, lead and zinc producer, began operations in 2014.
