TAM-1 LatAm cable starting final stage of marine surveying

Trans Americas Fiber System is entering the final stage of marine surveying for the deployment of its Trans Americas-1 (TAM-1) submarine cable system in Latin America.

This stage involves geophysical analysis of the seabed on which the cable is expected to be laid, thus confirming the exact cable route. The process runs in parallel with the route engineering phase.

“Trans Americas Fiber System, a key player in advancing digital infrastructure across Latin America and the Caribbean, is pleased to announce commencement of the final part of the marine survey activities covering the northern route of the Trans Americas-1 (TAM-1) submarine cable system,” the company said in a statement.

This part of the marine survey process was commissioned to Dutch geodata specialist Fugro NV.

At the end of 2023, another Trans Americas’ specialty contractor, EGS Survey, completed the marine survey stage for the cable’s planned branches and landing points, as reported at the time.

When fully deployed, the 7,000km system will connect Florida with Central America and the Caribbean, with 24 fiber optic pairs and 11 landing stations. The TAM-1 cable is being built by US cable specialist Xtera and has AT&T as an anchor client.

“Survey operations by Fugro NV, initiated under an agreement which concluded in September 2023, mark a crucial step in the realization of TAM-1 as a game-changer in digital infrastructure for the Trans Americas region,” the company said in a statement.

The marine survey will focus on the northern route of TAM-1 and is set to leverage Fugro NV’s technology and expertise using the survey vessel Fugro Gauss, according to the company.

The vessel started its transatlantic mobilization transit on December 20, beginning in the US and progressing southwards through Mexico, Belize and Honduras, said Trans Americas.

The entire process is expected to last around 70 days, after which TAM-1 would be ready for rollout. The system is planned to start operations in 2025.
