Madrid, January 12, 2022.- Telefónica is committed to a hybrid multicloud architecture to host its business applications, and has announced the deployment of a new platform developed on Red Hat OpenShift and hybrid cloud technology from IBM . Here it is already migrating and evolving applications that support Telefónica Spain, at the same time that it will allow it to continue developing new services, which will soon see the light of day to support its customers.

The Red Hat OpenShift enterprise Kubernetes platform offers Telefónica advantages of portability and infrastructure independence and allows it to operate lighter loads, improve the use of available computing capacities and support new applications that can be developed to be deployed in the cloud environment more convenient at any time.

The use of this technology reinforces Telefónica's commitment to containers, already initiated with the Cloud Garden service, and allows it to offer its business clients a service solution developed on Red Hat Openshift, adapted to their needs.

The future happens because this hybrid architecture extends to those environments where Telefónica hosts its business services: from its own data centers, in public clouds or at the edge.

Telefónica's expanded hybrid cloud approach comes as new figures highlight a shift by many global companies away from using a single cloud. According to the results of the latest hybrid cloud report from the IBM Institute of Business Value, there has been a dramatic shift in business needs, with only three percent of global respondents using a single private or public cloud in 2021, compared to 29 percent in 2019, establishing hybrid cloud as the dominant IT architecture.

“With this agreement we are transferring to customers the benefit of two technologies (container software and the hybrid cloud) whose use we believe will explode in the coming years, among other things due to the change that has occurred in the way of working and that has promoted the use of the cloud, speeding up and securing the computing and management processes that large companies and Public Administrations have to carry out”, said Fidel Fernández, Director of Technology and IT Transformation at Telefónica de España.

“The hybrid cloud is becoming a strong driver of business competitiveness and is the key component for companies as innovative as Telefónica to increase the speed, breadth and depth of their changes. The reason is that this type of cloud eliminates complexity, dispersion and heterogeneity of environments”, says Adolfo Hernandez, IBM Account General Manager for the Telefónica Group.

"Telefónica's commitment to an open hybrid cloud platform such as Red Hat OpenShift will allow it to deploy the full power of this environment now and in the future, providing the necessary flexibility to adapt to the evolution of business needs. Red Hat Openshift, Kubernetes' leading enterprise platform helps accelerate application development to bring enterprise open source innovation to market faster." says Julia Bernal, general director of Spain and Portugal at Red Hat.

This release joins other developments carried out thanks to the collaboration between Telefónica, IBM and Red Hat, which has been growing over the last year. Together, Telefónica launched Cloud Garden 2.0 to help customers develop and bring to market next-generation applications, and its first cloud- native core network platform to drive business transformation across industries.

Red Hat and OpenShift are trademarks or registered trademarks of Red Hat, Inc. or its subsidiaries in the US and other countries.
