Telxius opens SAM-1 connection to the Dominican Republic

Submarine cable company Telxius opened the SAM-1 extension from San Juan in Puerto Rico to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, according to a release.

In service since this month, from San Juan it connects with the company’s Brusa and PCCS cables.

According to Madrid-based Telxius, SAM-1 is the first cable to cover this route with such high capacity.

In total SAM-1 has a length of 25,000km and capacity of 20Tbps. It loops Latin America, with landing points in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala and the US. In addition, it has land routes in Guatemala, Argentina and Chile.

The investment for the extension was not revealed.

Telxius, part of Telefónica's infrastructure division, has eight state-of-the-art submarine fiber optic cables and terrestrial backhaul, totaling 100,000km of fiber optics.

Together with America Móvil, the company has the Tikal cable under construction, which will link Guatemala and the United States with a branch to Cancún in Mexico. Initial capacity is estimated at 190Tbps.

The company also participates in Google's Firmina submarine cable, which recently landed in Argentina. This infrastructure extends from the US East Coast to Las Toninas in Argentina, Punta del Este in Uruguay and then Praia Grande in Brazil. Telxius also participates in the Google Tannat submarine cable that connects Argentina with Uruguay.
