The Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications ( MTT ), through the Civil Aeronautics Board ( JAC ), published the results for August of the Statistical Report on Commercial Air Transport in Chile, which collects and processes data on the movement of passengers within and outside Chile, as well as the movement of cargo and mail.
In its most recent publication, the report revealed that more than 2 million 239 thousand people traveled to domestic and international destinations, which translates into an increase of 10.9% compared to 2023 and 5.6% compared to 2019.
“The month of August was the third consecutive month in which international traffic levels exceeded those recorded in 2019, with growth percentages ranging from 3.9% to 9.6%. This means that it will be the first month in which the cumulative number of international passengers in 2024 will exceed that of 2019. These positive rates allow us to confirm the recovery of international air transport in Chile and project more than 11.5 million international passengers for this year,” said the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz.
International flight traffic in August reached 1,027,186 passengers transported, which corresponds to an increase of 25.7% compared to 2023 and 9.6% compared to the same period in 2019.
“The routes between Chile and Brazil, mainly with destinations such as Sao Paulo and Florianópolis, continue to strongly influence the sustained increase in international traffic, which between January and August 2024 show an accumulated growth of 23.5% compared to the same period in 2023,” added the general secretary of the JAC, Martín Mackenna.
Regarding domestic traffic, the report revealed that more than 1.2 million passengers were transported during August, which represents an increase of 0.8% compared to 2023 and 2.4% compared to the same period in 2019. The destinations with the highest incidence during the month analyzed were Santiago-Calama, Santiago-Easter Island and Antofagasta-La Serena.
