With the support of the Energy and Gas Regulatory Commission (CREG) of Colombia, the Andean Committee of Regulatory Bodies and Regulatory Bodies of Electricity Services (CANREL) adopted the new operational and commercial regulations for the Andean Regional Short-Term Electricity Market (MAERCP). The decision, agreed on May 22, is detailed in Resolution No. 2402 of the General Secretariat of the Andean Community.

The regulations, which are estimated to come into effect from July 1, 2026, lay the foundation for strengthening energy exchange between member countries. Over a period of two years, the countries participating in the market will work on adapting their local regulations. The main objective is to take advantage of the energy surpluses of each country, which will generate benefits for all users. Likewise, the figure of the "regional coordinator" is established, whose role will be key to guaranteeing efficiency in transactions.

Omar Prias Caicedo, director of the Energy and Gas Regulatory Commission (CREG) of Colombia, highlighted this step: "We are consolidating a multi-year effort that not only benefits the economy of our countries, but also guarantees an energy supply more stable and at a lower cost for users".

The key aspects of the new resolution focus on three areas. First, the operating regulations, which establish specific guidelines for carrying out international electricity transactions, with the aim of making them not only safe, but also efficient. Second, the commercial regulations, which act as the regulatory framework to settle the purchase and sale of energy. Finally, the regulations of the regional coordinator that will be essential for adequate technical and commercial operation of the three countries.

We hope that the MAERCP will be an example of how countries can work together to improve economic development and energy security in the region. In addition, coordination in standards between countries and the creation of mechanisms to resolve differences will make the market more efficient.
