At its 29th ordinary session, the Plenary of the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) approved the classification of the 64-71 GHz frequency band as free spectrum for use by any interested party, without the need for a concession or authorization from this regulatory body. The technical operating conditions of the systems and devices that will operate in this frequency band were also approved.
This decision promotes regional harmonization in the use of the radio spectrum under international best practices and technological advances, enabling the deployment of smart devices associated with motion sensors and fixed field disturbance sensors.
These types of sensors are used in the development of new technologies that allow covering certain wireless communication needs that do not require physical interaction with the devices, which could benefit people with disabilities by allowing accessibility and interaction with their devices, facilitating communication.
This type of device includes, for example, radio links between fixed stations with high data transmission capacity, low-power devices, Wi-Gig systems, short-range devices known as wearables, as well as virtual reality and augmented reality devices, among others.
The Technical Committee on Radioelectric Spectrum (CTER) [1] of the Institute was a fundamental part in identifying the need to have a free spectrum scheme for this frequency band, which eventually led to the approved classification proposal to make more efficient use of the radioelectric spectrum.
The classification of the 64-71 GHz frequency band as free spectrum maximizes the contiguous amount of radio spectrum classified as free spectrum by extending operations in the 57-64 GHz frequency band to take advantage of existing systems that can operate in the entire 57-71 GHz frequency band. With this identification, the IFT expands the options for the innovation of technological solutions for the benefit of users of telecommunications services in the country.
