The state of play in Argentina's telecoms sector
Revenues in Argentina's telecommunications sector reached 3.02 trillion pesos (US$3.37 billion) in 2023, according to the latest report from regulator Enacom.
In 2022, revenues had totaled 1.4tn pesos, but Argentina had inflation of 211% last year.
Mobile communications brought in 1.4tn pesos last year, while fixed broadband generated 523bn pesos. Revenues for fixed telephony services were 247bn pesos and for pay TV 587bn pesos.
Monthly ARPU was 1,941 pesos for mobile communications, 3,772 pesos for fixed broadband, 2,927 pesos for fixed telephony, 4,347 pesos for subscription TV services via physical and radio links, and 10,383 pesos for satellite television.
MOBILE SERVICES
Mobile accesses in Argentina reached 62.7mn in 2023, with a penetration rate of 134%. There was 5% growth in the number of mobile lines over the year.
Prepaid lines, including mixed mode, totaled 54.4mn at year-end.
In 2023, 1,988 4G sites were deployed, reaching a total of 27,482 throughout the country.
Last year, operators acquired spectrum for 5G and Telecom Argentina announced that it hopes to end this year with 260 5G sites, up from the 100 sites it had activated as of the end of 2023.
Movistar stated that it has 5G coverage in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires, La Plata, San Juan, Mendoza, Bahía Blanca, Pinamar and Mar del Plata.
Claro did not provide details of its 5G deployment, but Nperf data shows that users were able to use 5G in Buenos Aires, Tandil, Rosario, Córdoba and San Miguel de Tucumán.
At the end of 2024, operators must have at least one 5G base station operating in each provincial capital.
FIXED BROADBAND
Fixed broadband accesses grew by 3.0% to 11.6mn last year, with household penetration at 78.6%.
Cable modem technology accounts for the largest proportion of these accesses (52%) with 6mn accounts, followed by fiber optics with 3.9mn (33.8%).
ADSL copper technology ended December at 836,390 accesses, followed by wireless technologies with 585,760. Other technologies, including dial up, totaled 194,796 accesses.
LANDLINE TELEPHONY AND PAY-TV
Pay-TV subscriptions were down compared with the end of 2022, reaching 9.16mn in December 2023, with a household penetration rate of 62.3%.
Argentina ended the year with 1.5mn satellite pay-TV connections and 7.6mn lines by physical or radio links.
Fixed telephony reached 7mn accesses as of end-December, which was flat compared with end-2022. Household penetration stood at 47.8%.
Of the total lines, 6.24mn were residential lines and the rest commercial or government lines.
