The state of play in Peru's telecoms market

Peru registered 3.66mn fixed internet connections, up 10.2% year-on-year, in 1Q24, driven by a 12.5% increase in the residential internet segment, which represents 94.7% of the total.

Fiber-only operators WOW and WIN added 260,731 and 193,956 subscribers between March 2023 and March 2024, while Claro gained 80,027. Market leader Telefónica del Perú lost 293,756 clients and Entel 18,504, according to latest figures by regulator Osiptel

Telefónica and Entel have an agreement to share infrastructure via a wholesale fiber network.

In Q1, Telefónica led the fixed internet market with 36.5%, followed by Claro with 25.2%, WIN with 14.4% and WOW reaching 12.4%. A group formed by Fiberlux, Fiberlux Tech and Fiberline obtained 1.8% market share, Mi Fibra 1.9% and Entel 1.7%, among others. 

Fiber optics represented nearly 2.26mn connections, or 62% of the total and 19.3 percentage points more than in the year-ago period. Cable modem accounted for 33.3%.

Considering only fiber connections, Telefónica led with 30.3%, followed by WIN (23.2%), WOW (20%), Claro (12.4%) and MiFibra (3%). The Fiberlux, Fiberlux Tech and Fiberline group achieved 2.8% and PyD Telecom 1.8%, among others.

Over half of connections were at speeds of at least 200Mbps.

MOBILE SERVICES

Peru recorded 41.9mn mobile lines, up 1.66%, with the number of postpaid lines growing by 4.97% to 18mn (43% of the total) and prepaid lines falling by 0.7% to 23.9mn (57%).

Claro remained the market leader with a share of 30.2%, followed by Movistar with 28.2%, Entel with 22.4% and Bitel with 18.8%.

Virtual operators Dolphin Mobile, Flash Servicios, Guinea Mobile, Suma Móvil, Intermax and Dolphin Telecom combined represented 0.45% of the market.

Bitel and Claro registered market share growth of 11.6% and 1.88%, while Movistar lost 2.79% and Entel 0.36%.
