TIM launches GPRS service, others follow

Bnamericas
Mobile operator TIM Peru has launched GPRS services over its GSM network, allowing users to establish high speed Internet connection and send multimedia messages, the company said in a statement. TIM is the first Peruvian operator to offer such services but Telefonica Moviles Peru is set to match them by year-end, using CDMA2000 1X technology currently being installed by Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), Telefonica Moviles Peru spokesperson Yanixa Honor said. BellSouth Peru will also be installing CDMA2000 1X, in line with BellSouth's strategy for its Latin America divisions, and BellSouth Peru marketing vice president Juan Fernando Correa told BNamericas the company expects to launch 3G services during the first quarter of 2004.
