UAE awards waterworks grant to Costa Rica

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will award a US$10mn grant to Costa Rica for the reconstruction of several aqueducts that were damaged last year during the passage of Hurricane Otto.

The funds will be used to improve water supply in the regions of the country that were the hardest hit by Otto in November, the Costa Rican government said in a statement.

Otto caused damage to road infrastructure, communication and power lines, and the excess rainfall also resulted in damage to agricultural land. Costa Rica has received other grants from international financial institutions to help relief efforts in the affected areas.

Securing reconstruction aid was one of the objectives of the visit that President Luis Guillermo Solís Rivera made last week to UAE, according to the statement.
