The Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos, announced the extension of the agricultural emergency due to water deficit until the end of the year. He argued that the purpose is to continue the credit aid instruments to address the effects caused by the drought . The emergency includes the areas of livestock, dairy, horticulture, fruit growing, agriculture, beekeeping, poultry and forestry.
“This morning we had the meeting with the agricultural emergency advisory group, in which we analyzed the situation with objective data. Without prejudice to the fact that we are on the path to normality in rainfall, we still have to recover and reach the ideal point, because there are areas that are still deficient and others that have excess water," explained Mattos, in statements to the press, made this Wednesday the 20th.
In addition, he stated that forecasts indicate that the El Niño phase would begin in the last quarter of 2023, which results in higher than normal rainfall probabilities.
“Considering the agricultural emergency situation that has been going on for 11 months, and that the drought has impacted the economy of many productions, the decision was made to extend it for a little more than three months, until the end of the year,” he reported.
He clarified that, although the causes are ceasing, the effects have not yet. “If we interrupt the emergency, the credit instruments that have provided support and backing to producers who still need it will fall,” emphasized the Minister of Livestock.
The leader declared that the emergency is maintained for all areas, that the Food Contingency Plan has ended, that the exemption from the consular fee tax for importing fodder will not be replicated, and that grazing will not be authorized in the vicinity of the streets.
“The slogan is that the productive units continue standing and operating. The aid we have given is the most important in history, reaching 20,000 solutions for 13,000 producers,” concluded Fernando Mattos.
