Uruguay opens potable water plant

The Uruguayan government opened a US$13.3mn potable water plant in the city of Durazno.

The initiative was partially financed by the World Bank, according to a press release from state water utility OSE.

The plant has a capacity of up to 700m3/h and is expected to cover the city's water demand until 2035, the housing, planning and environment ministry (Mvotma) said in a press release.

Severe floods in 2007 affected the functioning of the previous plant and the new plant was therefore built on higher terrain and using climate-risk technologies, said OSE head Milton Machado.
