Uruguay takes steps to boost electromobility

Uruguay’s energy ministry unveiled a series of measures aimed at boosting electromobility.

The measures target sectors that still haven’t transitioned from fossil fuels and represent 30% of the country’s energy matrix, daily El País quoted energy minister Omar Paganini as saying.

The government will give 43mn pesos (US$1mn) to departmental administrations to help with first electric mini-bus purchases.

It will also issue a decree regarding charging interoperability to set a standard for chargers. Paganini said this doesn’t mean the country will use only one type of charger, but it will set security guidelines for valid ones.

Another decree will entail the creation of a public-private partnership space to discuss sector challenges, according to a press release.

Lastly, the government will draft a proposal to establish a period in which private operators that fully finance and install chargers in public spaces are exempt from capacity payments and flat fees.
