US$100mn Bogotá cable car system gearing up for February inauguration

Bogotá authorities expect to begin operation of the 413bn-peso (US$98mn) San Cristóbal cable car project in February.
In addition to the funds required by the cable car system, another 366bn pesos will be invested in related works, including social housing, greening, cultural and educational centers, the urban development institute (IDU) said in a statement, bringing the total investment to 779bn pesos.
Among the urban equipment works are greening initiatives, cultural centers, and educational facilities.
Work on the cable car, which will benefit more than 400,000 inhabitants of southeast Bogotá, began on Monday.
San Cristóbal will have an extension of 2.8km. It is one of the seven cable car lines included in the 2022-2035 territorial development plan, which, with an investment of approximately US$438mn, will be located in the high areas of Bogotá.
Three other aerial cable systems: one in Ciudad Bolívar and two in the center of Bogotá, around the Avenida Séptima Green Corridor, are currently being structured and financing is expected to be ready by the end of the year.
