US$380mn Santiago metro extension starts operations

The US$380mn extension of Santiago’s metro line No. 3 has started operations.

The 3.9km extension includes three new stations, benefitting Quilicura district, operator Metro de Santiago said on social media.

Line No. 3 was inaugurated in 2019.

An estimated 270,000 additional users will reach central Santiago within 20 minutes, a 55% drop in travel time.

“When we see a city that was developed in a segregated manner, Metro’s arrival constitutes an act of territorial justice as well,” President Gabriel Boric said during the inauguration ceremony.

Metro de Santiago is also investing US$400mn in the extension of Line No.2, expected to be finished this year. Line No. 7 demands US$2.5bn and will start operations in 2028.
