Vale, Pará state to hold new round of talks over nickel mine
Brazilian mining titan Vale and representatives of Pará state will hold a new round of talks in an attempt to reach a solution and help restart the Onça Puma nickel mine.
At the end of May, the country's supreme court mediated a talk between the firm and state representatives but both sides failed to agree a deal and a new round of talks was scheduled for June 20, the court said in the minutes of the meeting, which were published Friday.
In February, Pará’s environmental secretariat suspended the mining permit, alleging non-compliance with regulations, and although the company was able to reverse the decision, the state suspended the license again in April.
The shutdown has been generating concern among workers' representatives who fear the company may cut jobs in the face of the persistent controversies.
