Vale pays another US$250mn in compensation for Brumadinho disaster

Brazilian mining giant Vale paid another 1.2bn reais (US$252mn) to Minas Gerais state under a compensation deal for victims of the Brumadinho iron ore tailings dam collapse, the company said in a release.

The payments made so far under the February 2021 agreement total 18.5bn reais. The company agreed to pay 37.7bn reais in compensation, the largest settlement of its kind in Latin America.

The Brumadinho tragedy occurred in January 2019 and was Brazil’s worst mining disaster, killing at least 259 people and causing widespread environmental damage.

Most of the compensation is being used for infrastructure projects in Minas Gerais, where governor Romeu Zema is seeking reelection this year.
