Venezuela eyes 2017 Barinas hydro upgrade
Venezuelam state power firm Corpoelec will complete upgrades and repairs to the José Antonio Páez hydro plants in Barinas state during 2017, deputy minister Freddy Britto said in a release from energy ministry MPPEE.
Corpoelec completed repairs on the hydro's unit one turbine this week and is now working on its unit three turbine. Upon repairing and upgrading all four of José Antonio Páez's 60MW turbines, the plant will have a total capacity of 240MW.
The plant is currently suffering from a high level of sediment build up, Britto added.
The deputy energy minister also expects Corpoelec to launch a mini-hydro installation campaign at the end of this quarter. The state firm will install 1MW or less capacity hydro plants to cover low demand areas throughout Venezuela.
Corpoelec will construct the mini-hydro's components and mechanical parts in-house, Britto said.
