Venezuela immigration forces Brazil to bolster security in Roraima

Brazil will beef up its military presence in the state of Roraima after recent clashes between Brazilians and immigrants from neighboring Venezuela.

On Saturday, some residents of Pacaraima city attacked tents and shelters of Venezuelan immigrants after a local merchant had allegedly been assaulted and beaten by a group of immigrants, reported government news agency Agência Brasil.

The deep economic crisis in Venezuela has led to a large exodus of people to neighboring countries with growing tensions in some places.

Besides sending more military personnel to Roraima, the government said it would also send a number of health workers to help the growing number of Venezuelans who are escaping the crisis in their own country.
