Violence in Mexican state affecting private construction sector, says chamber
The crisis of crime and violence in Sinaloa state in northwest Mexico is impacting the private construction sector, which has had to halt works, according to construction chamber CMIC.
The chamber’s branch in Sinaloa has expressed concern to its national headquarters, CMIC president Luis Méndez Jaled said during a press conference on Wednesday.
“[The violence] is starting to have an effect. Last Friday, I had a call with the Sinaloa delegate and he said that they have had to halt works due to insecurity,” he said. “We're hoping for the return of peace.”
The head of the chamber added that that the security situation in other states was not serious enough to halt works, despite "isolated incidents" in Morelos, Guanajuato and Tamaulipas states.
Méndez Jaled added that the 2025 spending budget proposed by the federal government to congress includes an estimated 8.7bn pesos (US$432mn) for the infrastructure, communications and transport ministry (SICT) for mixed investment road infrastructure projects.
These include the construction of the following highways:
- La Garza-Amatitlanes in Puebla state
- Querétaro-San Luis Potosí in the two states
- Coatzacoalcos-Villahermosa in Tabasco and Veracruz states
- Matehuala-Saltillo in Nuevo León state
- Pirámides-Tulancingo-Pachuca in México and Hidalgo states
- Saltillo-Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo in Coahuila and Nuevo León states
- Texcoco-Zacatepec in México, Tlaxcala and Puebla states
- Arriaga-Tapachula in Chiapas state
- Campeche-Mérida in Campeche and Yucatán states.
- San Luis Potosí-Matehuala in San Luis Potosí state.
- Tampico-Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas state.
