Mexican low-cost airline Volaris will start operations at the 84.9bn-peso (US$4bn) Felipe Ángeles international airport (AIFA) the same day the terminal is scheduled to be inaugurated.
“The cities where Volaris will arrive from this new airport and for which routes, once the necessary government authorizations are in place, will begin operations as of March 21, 2022, are Tijuana and Cancún, both with daily traffic,” the company said in a statement, adding that flights will be sold as of Wednesday.
The announcement comes after CEO Enrique Beltranena told analysts during a conference call on October 22 that the company, one of the country's biggest airlines, was carrying out demand studies and mulling the option of serving the new terminal.
BNamericas reported on Tuesday that major airlines were not willing to transfer some operations from Mexico City’s Benito Juárez international airport (AICM) to AIFA, which is about an hour from the capital.
“Volaris will maintain its current operating strategy at the Mexico City international airport (AICM), as well as at the other 42 airports where it has a presence in the country. These new routes will be added to the current offer of the airline in the capital airport,” the company said.
Besides Volaris, only Venezuelan airline Conviasa has confirmed operations at AIFA so far, starting in May.
