West Indies sees 1.4GW export potential from interconnection

West Indies Power (WIP) envisions 1.4GW export potential from its Caribbean interconnection project, according to a presentation by company CEO Kerry McDonald. The project entails development of geothermal plants and supplying electricity through high voltage direct current/high voltage alternating current submarine cables. Capacity would come from islands Saba (2MW local use, 200MW export), St Vincent (15MW local use, 200MW export), Dominica (12MW local use, 500MW export) and Nevis-St Kitts (45MW local use, 500MW export). In Dominica, WIP plans to drill 2-3 slim holes to a depth of 1,000m in the Soufriere valley in the second quarter of next year. On St Kitts, the developer has signed an LOI with the government and talks are underway. And startup of a 10MW plant in Nevis is scheduled for next quarter, while a 40MW second phase is penciled in to begin in 2013.
