WGC studies US$30mn co-gen project for Itajaí port

Brazilian consulting firm WGC Networks and the Santa Catarina Federal University (UFSC) are studying the feasibility of a US$30mn, 25MW co-generation plant for Itajai port in Santa Catarina state, according to Agencia Estado. The port would use 12MW of power and the rest would be sold elsewhere: the plant could also be used to expand refrigeration facilities at the port, WGC partner Benedito Carraro was quoted as saying by Agencia Estado. The financial and technical feasibility studies are in the final phase, and WGC is simultaneously negotiating with electric power investors - including Belgium's Tractebel and state-controlled distributor Celesc - for financing, he said. One potential partner is state natural gas distributor SCGas, which would have to build a 40km pipeline to transport 120,000 cubic meters a day of gas for the plant.
