Guatemala City, March 07, 2022. – The incorporation of electric buses to the TRANSMETRO public transportation system of the municipality of Guatemala is making steady progress in the implementation process of the new Line 5, which is already in the testing phase, thanks to the Feasibility study of the pilot project financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) as part of the promotion of sustainable urban mobility in the region.

Within the scope of this initiative is the change from diesel to electric units, which generates a positive impact on the environment and the transfer of knowledge about this new technology and recharging systems to the authorities in charge.

The executive president of CABEI, Dr. Dante Mossi, indicated: “ this project promoted by the Municipality of Guatemala will improve the quality of life for more than 15,000 users who, we are sure, will increase the number as they feel motivated to use efficient public transport, sustainable and safe. In addition, it represents a great replica opportunity for other cities in the region.”

According to the study carried out, Line 5 would connect Parque Colón with the Civic Center in zone 1 along the streets and avenues of zone 5, with a length of 14 round trip kilometers and would require around 17 buses and would have a circuit of 1 hour and 24 minutes. The feasibility study was financed by CABEI through a non-reimbursable technical cooperation for US$40,000.

This cooperation is part of CABEI's 2020-2024 Institutional Strategy, and contributes to the axes of Sustainable Competitiveness and Human Development and Social Inclusion, which seek to intervene in strengthening the economic, social and institutional factors that determine regional competitiveness, as well as how to generate social capacities to improve people's well-being and quality of life.
