Work on Amazon pipelines to begin by March

Work on the two natural gas pipelines in Brazil's northern Amazonas state will begin by March next year, according to Henyo Trindade Barreto, the head of Gaspetro, the natural gas unit of Brazil's federal energy company Petrobras. Petrobras expects to get environmental licenses for the projects by year-end, start construction by March and complete the projects by the end of 2005, Barreto said. There are two pipelines that will transport gas from the Urucu natural gas fields, one going east to Amazonas state capital Manaus (US$393mn, 417km) and another going south to Rondonia state capital Porto Velho (US$350mn, 550km). Amazonas has 84 billion cubic meters in gas reserves, of which 44 billion are in Urucu. Manuas' consumption is forecast to be at 3.5 million cubic meters/day (mcm/d) and Porto Velho's 1.5mcm/d. In the Uruco-Porto Velho pipeline, Petrobras' partners in the project include US-based El Paso, Brazilian investment group CS Participacoes, and Brazilian steel tubes companies Duferco and GDK.
