ZEG Biogás and COAGRO sign contract for first biomethane plant in northern Rio de Janeiro

ZEG Biogás and COAGRO have signed a contract to build the first biomethane plant in northern Rio de Janeiro, which will also be the first in the state to produce renewable fuel from agro-industrial waste. The biorefinery will be implemented within 18 months, and the plant is expected to begin selling the product to customers in early 2026.
The biorefinery resulting from the partnership will have an initial production capacity of 3.7 million m3 per year, with implementation scheduled to begin in October 2024. With an investment of approximately R$60 million to be made by ZEG Biogás, the plant will be the first in the state of Rio de Janeiro to produce biomethane from vinasse, a byproduct of ethanol production by COAGRO, also generating high-quality biofertilizer in the process.
The project also foresees the possibility of expanding biogas generation, if there is greater availability of biomass, which could even increase and make viable local agro-industrial production or the planting of new crops that are still little used.
“This partnership is the result of mutual cooperation between companies that understand the importance of the urgent energy transition towards a low-carbon economy. Biomethane is a clean, socially responsible fuel and will make a significant contribution to making Brazil a renewable energy powerhouse in the short term,” says ZEG Biogás CEO Eduardo Acquaviva.
“Considering also the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAM), which will be applied to products destined for export to the European Union from January 2026, having the option of a clean fuel, which can be produced in an economically viable way and which will replace other fossil fuels in the port region, is something even more urgent. This will potentially make a big difference in the creation of sustainable corridors in our economy,” concludes the executive.
