Jamaican mobile operator Cable & Wireless (CWJ) has awarded Canada's Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT) and eight US exporters contracts worth US$173mn to build a GSM network, the United States Export-Import bank (Ex-Im Bank) said in a statement. The bank provided a US$72.3mn, seven-year guarantee for a Citibank loan in support of the project. CWJ is building an island-wide GSM network and its contract with Nortel also covers an upgrade of its existing data-transmission landline network. The other equipment suppliers are: Hewlett Packard (computer hardware and software); PowerTech Services (emergency generators); Digital Island (design services); Glenayre Electronics (messaging hardware and software); Tallard Technologies (PABX system); Global Communications Consulting (radio equipment); and Rohn Industries (transmission towers).
