Grupo México Transportes to invest over US$400mn in 2025

Grupo México Transportes (GMXT), the rail logistics unit of miner Grupo México, plans to invest US$410mn this year, similar to 2024. 

The resources will be allocated to new works in the network, yards and terminals, new rail equipment and acquiring cutting-edge technology, the company said in its Q4 report. 

“In 2025, GMXT will maintain a focus on volume growth, generating a greater market share compared to trucking, a continuous improvement in service for the benefit of its customers, and continuing to improve productivity indicators affected by migrant caravans and operations requested by the governments of Mexico and the United States,” it said. 

GMXT also announced that considering the expected volume growth this year, its board ratified the investment plan, which includes a 15% increase in the fleet of locomotives and 1,600 rail cars, as well as other expansion, efficiency and safety projects that “allow for better coexistence in the localities in which we operate.”

In 2024, the number of rail cars transported grew 8.2% compared to the previous year to just over 2mn. In the fourth quarter, the company reported that volume growth was led by the intermodal segment, with 27% more cars transported due to the increase in cargo volume on cross-border routes and domestic freight.

GMXT’s sales grew 7.5% to 60.6bn pesos (US$3bn) last year, although operating profit fell 5.1% to 16.9bn pesos.
