Accelerating 2021 for the future 5G

By Juan José Oliver, Telco Transformation Lead for LATAM at Dell Technologies

In 2020, the world relied on digital platforms to stay connected more than ever. From work and school, to health and personal relationships, it was technology that proved powerful and necessary in our everyday lives. As we move into 2021, the evolution of digital technologies brings a renewed urgency in Edge computing. Today, cutting-edge computing continues to be the thread that connects the seams of our lives with high technology and reinforces the fabric of our future with 5G.

Better and faster connections are becoming more and more important as we continue to make our homes smart centers for our everyday lives, be it smart TVs, virtual assistants or security aspects. For this reason, it was no surprise that smart home devices were featured prominently at this year's CES virtual expo.

With new human-centric innovations, it won't be long before our world becomes increasingly hybrid and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions are critical to our well-being. For example, cities are working to develop devices to protect our health after COVID-19. Along with the exponential increase in data and network traffic, these advances are making the market for edge computing even more valuable. According to Markets and Markets , the size of the Edge computing market will grow 34% by 2025, from $ 3.6 billion in 2020 to $ 15.7 billion in 2025.

Edge technology is not new, but it is inevitable

When you look forward to the possibility of hyperconnected smart devices powering the world's cities, it's easy to get carried away. The truth is that cutting edge computing is not new. Looking back ten years, the first fax servers were configured to bring office technology into the digital age; this was state-of-the-art technology. The difference is that there is now a convergence of more developed technologies accelerating the progress towards 5G connectivity speeds.

Additionally, Edge technology is closely tied to another component of the hybrid cloud, giving businesses the opportunity to capitalize on smaller, more manageable services with servers. This reduces the distance between the processing point and the functional consumption point. It meets time-critical data processing needs, enabling reliable, real-time services where even a second delay in response can be costly. Either to detect an intruder in your home or alert the emergency services about the fall of a family member.

Edge computing, 5G and people

Edge technology not only enables more responsive, reliable and human-centric technology applications, but it also strengthens our future with 5G. KPMG believes that Edge computing and 5G technologies will be key to global economic recovery as we move forward; beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. As the network matures in Latin America, it will be those with Edge technology capabilities who will be prepared to maximize the high-speed opportunity. 5G will allow it to handle incredible amounts of data from machine to machine, as IoT technologies and cutting-edge computing converge.

Industries such as manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and transportation eagerly await the development of 5G and its transformative impacts. By strengthening the digital backbone of the company with state-of-the-art computer networks, early improvements in productivity and efficiency can be achieved. These benefits can be felt more immediately, not only in the company, but also in the human beings they serve. Whether through virtual reality-enabled escapism, turbocharged gaming, super-efficient smart homes, or robotic surgery and driverless cars.

Let's build the future today, not tomorrow.
