Sao Gonçalo do Amarante district is located approximately 11km from central Natal. In 2010, Brazil's civil aviation agency (Anac) launched a tender to concession the airport. The concession contract entails concluding construction plans, including completing runways, take-off and taxiing lanes. The 28-year concession will have three years for construction and 25 years for operation. The facility will be the largest airport terminal in Latin America and the seventh largest in the world, with capacity to handle 6mn passengers annually. The Inframérica consortium, comprised by Brazil's Grupo Engevix and Argentina's Corporación América, was awarded the concession in 2011. In 2020, Inframérica announced the request for amicable return of the concession, so it was retendered and awarded to Zurich Airport Brasil in early 2024 after canceling 320mn reais. The new concession contract has a duration of 30 years.
