Three lines are to be developed between the two destinations, one of which would be dedicated to cargo transport. Early descriptions of the project indicate the possibility of extending the cargo line to the port city of San Antonio. The rail lines will embark from the Estación Central commune in Santiago and intersect the metropolitan communes of Maipú, Peñaflor, Padre Hurtado, Talagante before arriving at the final destination in Melipilla. The project envisions a total eleven stations (nine to be subterranean) and will also include interconnection with Santiago's operating metro line No. 1 and the metro line No. 6. Upon completion, travel time between Santiago and Melipilla is estimated at 45min with trains expected to travel at speeds up to 120km/h. The line is forecasted to move 31mn passengers/y. A total of 22 trains are expected to operate on the line, which will also include 22 automobile crossing points and 61 pedestrian crossing bridges, of which 47 are to have elevators and two will be underground. The Melitrén train service will run between Chilean capital Santiago and the district of Melipilla, located southwest of Santiago. It is estimated that the new service will serve an area of influence of more than 1,100,000 inhabitants. It will benefit 8 municipalities in the Metropolitan Region: Estación Central, Cerrillos, Maipú, Padre Hurtado, Peñaflor, Talagante, El Monte and Melipilla.
