Tucuruí currently has an installed capacity of 8.37GW, enough to meet the demand of around 16.7mn people, and with the capacity increase it would reach 10.87GW. The hydroelectric plant began operating in 1984 and an upgrade completed in 2008 almost doubled its capacity. Electricity generated by Tucuruí feeds into the national interconnected system.
