Description: Belonging to Ecuador's state-owned Petroamazonas, Block 31 is located in Orellana province in 85ha, out of which 39ha are located within the Yasuní National Park. The field has been operated by the company since 2007, when it acquired the environmental permits to undergo development activities. Fields include Apaika and Nenke, which combined hold 230Mb of 18° API crude. Another prospect which is being developed is Apaika Sur, which is expected to hold 12.6Mb of 17-19° API of unrisked crude. Apaika currently produces 5,700b/d from 12 wells while Nenke is still being tested through an exploratory well as of December 2014. The decision to exploit these fields has been questioned by environmentalists and social movements due the impact that it would have on the rainforest and indigenous groups in voluntary isolation. According to the company, all procedures have taken into account the project's environmental considerations. During 2014, Petroecuador undertook 200,000m2 of reforestation activities in block 31.
