The water will be used for human consumption, irrigated farms, raising livestock and other economic purposes. This will mean the incorporation of vast areas of land that are currently unproductive. The first phase of the canal will transport water from the Paulo Afonso IV reservoir in Bahia to kilometer 114.55 of its route, passing through Santa Brigida, to Sergipe, where it will pass through Canindé de São Francisco and the old R-5 reservoir in Poço Redondo. The Xingó Channel as a whole will have a length of about 300 kilometers and will be divided into four phases. Phases I, II, III and IV will cover the municipalities of Paulo Afonso (BA), Santa Brígida (BA), Canindé do São Francisco (SE) and Poço Redondo (SE). For human supply, water will be supplied to the Bahia municipalities of Paulo Afonso and Santa Brígida, as well as a supply network in the state of Sergipe. When complete, the channel will benefit more than 2.4 million people.
