The initiative will enlarge and modernize the area of the terminal, in addition to increasing security by building new passenger bridges. The project also includes an extension of the runway, taxiway and apron, which will allow the government to achieve its goal of receiving larger transatlantic aircraft. To carry out the works it will be necessary to relocate some families and a police station, in addition to the diversion of some creeks. The airport is located 41 km to the south of the capital of Georgetown, on the banks of the Demerara river, Demerara-Mahaica region, Guyana.
