Description: The Fenix brownfield nickel laterite project seeks to expand and refurbish existing plant and mine facilities built in 1977 and operated until they were closed in 1980 due to high fuel costs and collapsing nickel prices. In 2005 HudBay began a drilling program, totaling more than 1,450 drillholes and 36,200m in one year. The project calls for converting power generation from oil to coke, and using coal instead of oil in the process plant. Fenix is expected to cost about $1bn to bring to production, subject to energy prices. The property has 41.4Mt of mineral reserves. Production over the 27-year project life is estimated to be 1.3Blb of nickel. The latest feasibility study for the Fenix project assumes that production of ferro-nickel will begin in 2014 (year1) with a ramp up to full production by year 4. The project is 98% owned by Solway Investment Group and the Guatemala Nickel Company (CGN) holds the remaining stake.
