Intermodal Railway Terminal of Chiapas

Description: The project consists of the development of an intermodal rail terminal in the state of Chiapas to create an efficient system for handling containerized cargo, facilitate rail cargo transportation in southern Mexico and improve the supply chain between Mexico and Central America. The intermodal facility would be located near Line K, part of the Tehuantepec Isthmus Railway ( FIT ) project. The new intermodal and logistics services provided through the terminal would help alleviate traffic congestion related to heavy truck traffic, environmental impacts and delays in the transportation of goods entering and leaving the port of Puerto Chiapas. Additionally, the facility is projected to increase the capacity and productivity of Puerto Chiapas; improve asset utilization for port, rail and road transport service providers; increase transportation productivity and intermodal capacity; reduce transportation costs; and create a more competitive environment for containerized cargo transportation. The terminal would be designed to assemble trains of up to 60 cars; loading and unloading trucks on specifically designed service roads; loading and unloading trains and trucks with automated gantry and yard cranes; and carry out mechanized container transfers on tracks located outside the main railway lines. The construction of the intermodal terminal could improve competition between rail and road transportation modes, become a pole of attraction for new value-added activities and industrial development in areas close to the facility, and improve the port's overall operational efficiency. .
