Lithium brines generally occur in surface and sub-surface brines as well as in deeper brine aquifers. Laguna Verde is in a similar geological setting to other lithium-bearing salars in Chile in that it is in a closed basin, surrounded by volcanic cones. The lake is fed by active hot springs that appear to be the primary source of lithium, potassium and other metallic salts. Water depths vary from 0.5m to more than 60m, with an average depth of 33m calculated from bathymetric measurements. Laguna Verde is located 193km east of the city of Copiapo, adjacent to highway 60 and 15km west of the border with Argentina.
