The facility was built in 1999 and went out of operation in 2003 following a landslide along the penstock alignment. The Guyanese government has declared the rehabilitation of the station to be a priority project in order to substitute diesel consumption with renewable energy. Works will include the rehabilitation of the intake structure and head race channel, and the rehabilitation or replacement of the electro-mechanical equipment.
