OPTIMIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE VALDIVIA WWTP

Description: OPTIMIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE VALDIVIA EDAS Residential water treatment plants that serve a population equal to or greater than 2,500 inhabitants The Project consists of modifying the current operation of the EDAS, expanding its capacity to treat wastewater from the city of Valdivia, from an average annual flow of 300 L/s to 600 L/s, and a maximum instantaneous flow of 525 L/s to 900 L/s. These flows are in line with the projection of the growth in the demand for sanitation services in the city of Valdivia, and consistent with the Development Plans required by the Superintendence of Sanitary Services (SISS). The Project has considered as main modifications the incorporation of a second water line in the pretreatment area; the incorporation of two settlers and related works in the primary treatment area; while, in the chlorination area, two contact chambers similar to the existing ones are incorporated and the construction of a chlorine gas collection room, while in the discharge system a new outlet and flow measurement chamber is added similar to the existing one. On the other hand, in the sludge line, the Project considers the incorporation of two thickeners, the expansion of the sludge dehydration room and the container yard, as main works. Additionally, the Project considers a series of works to mitigate odor emissions generated in the Pretreatment, Primary Treatment, Disinfection and Sludge Line processes. It is important to mention that, although the Project will increase the discharge of treated effluent to the Valdivia River, it does not consider works that modify the discharge outfall, nor the underwater discharge conduit, because it has sufficient hydraulic capacity to absorb this increase. The Project corresponds to a modification of the project "Sewage Treatment Plant (EDAS) of the City of Valdivia (Second Presentation)" approved environmentally through RCA No. 528/2000, and aims to improve safety and flexibility operation of the EDAS and respond to the growth of the population of the city of Valdivia by the year 2039, with the consequent increase in the demand for treatment and final disposal of treated wastewater. For this, the Project incorporates new equipment and works to the process, which will allow for an environmentally adequate treatment of wastewater, as well as mitigating the odors generated in the different processes of the EDAS.
