Paving the road will improve access to the Intermediate Savannahs and create an entrance to the upper Berbice River, enhancing the agricultural potential of Kwakwani, Ebini and Kimbia. The road is seen as vital to connecting maritime and land transport networks and improving the land link with neighbouring Brazil. The project involves the extension of the all-weather road to Lethem in Region 9 (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo). This road network is currently used by some 50,000 travellers transporting goods from the coast to Guyana's interior regions and even as far as Brazil. The project will be carried out between the towns of Mabura Hill and Lethem.
