Description: Preparation of studies and engineering projects for the Canhotinho dam to mitigate flooding in the Mundaú river basin, in Canhotinho/PE. The Canhotinho dam will benefit the municipality of Canhotinho, in Pernambuco (approximately 24,000 inhabitants), and the municipalities of São José da Laje, União dos Palmares, Branquinha, Murici, Rio Largo and Satuba, in Alagoas (approximately 234,000 inhabitants), in addition to increasing water availability for multiple uses and developing local production arrangements in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, mainly between the municipalities of Canhotinho and Angelim. The 2010 floods generated losses of R$3.4 billion in Pernambuco and R$1.9 billion in Alagoas, affecting the social sector with homeless people, missing people and fatal victims. There are records of hundreds of deaths in São José da Laje-AL in 1969, and social and economic losses in the order of billions in 2010. Factors such as geography, urban occupation and climate change increase the risk of flooding, requiring investments in containment infrastructure associated with the urban planning of municipalities. The Canhotinho dam will be part of a flood containment system in a river basin that faces recurring tragedies. It seeks to mitigate the effects of flooding along the Canhoto and Mundaú rivers, protecting families from Pernambuco and Alagoas. The proposed intervention will bring benefits related to the cushioning of floods in the main rivers of the river basin, improving macro-drainage and the functioning of micro-drainage in the municipalities in the benefited area.
