The works will also include protection of the flow and improvements to the drainage system for the population of the sector. The recovery of the canal includes the sectors from Calamar to Pasacaballos in Bolívar department, as well as the Lequerica, Mantunilla and Correa pipelines. The canal is located on the Magdalena river, between the departments of Bolívar and Atlántico. The project covers the waterway between Calamar and the bay of Cartagena. The project will maintain sediment control between the channel and the bays of Cartagena and Barbacoas; it will also improve the swamp-ciénaga and ciénaga-canal connections and promote the restoration of the ecosystems of the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park. The generation of 61,766 direct and indirect jobs in the area is estimated. The benefited population will be 1.5 million inhabitants of 19 municipalities, eight from the Atlantic (Campo de La Cruz, Candelaria, Luruaco, Manatí, Repelón, Sabanalarga, Santa Lucia and Suan); ten from Bolívar (Arjona, Arroyohondo, Calamar, Cartagena de Indias, Mahates, María La Baja, San Cristóbal, San Estanislao, Soplaviento and Turbana); and one from Sucre (San Onofre).
