This system is the only route, from the city of Rio de Janeiro, available to go around Guanabara Bay, allowing access to the Lakes Region, to the north of the state, and to the north and northeast regions of the country. The section also connects the cities of Rio de Janeiro, in the homonymous state, and Gobernador Valadares, in Minas Gerais. The concession contract covers duplication works, additional lanes, footbridges, wildlife crossings, bus stops and bicycle lanes, among other works, and will include the following sections: Highway BR-116/RJ, between km 2.1 and km 148.4; and between km 168.1 and km 214.7 in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Highway BR-116/MG, between km 408.5 and km 818.1 in the State of Minas Gerais. Highway BR-465/RJ, between km 0.0 and km 22.8 in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Highway BR-493/RJ, between km 0.0 and km 26.0; and between km 48.1 and km 123.7 in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The concession contract will be for 30 years and will cover a total of 726.9 kilometers. It is estimated that 8.8bn reais will be invested during the concession period, while operational expenses will be 8.5bn reais.
