The catchment source of the branch will be the Poções reservoir, located 15km east of the municipal seat of Monteiro, with a capacity to store 29Mm3. The Cariri Branch corresponds to the second component of the Paraíba State Water Security Project, which seeks to improve the reliability of water supply and the resilience of services in the face of extreme drought events in water-scarce regions. The project will supply the municipalities of Monteiro, Silver, Old Gold, Sume, Amparo, Serra Branca, Delivery, São Jose dos Cordeiros, São João do Cariri, Parari, Desterro, Teixeira, Cacimbas, Taperoa, Santo Andre, Gurjao, Asuncion and Junco of Seridó.
